The Town of Port Hawkesbury (est. 1889) has a population of 3400 people and is a major commercial and recreation centre located on the shores of the Strait of Canso. Year-round services include accommodations, banks, restaurants and shopping. Swimming, tennis, golfing, hiking, sailing, kayaking-all are within easy access, as are cultural activities including a variety of musical concerts and the J. Franklin Wright Art Gallery.
The Strait of Canso Port is located on the east coast of Canada between mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. It is considered one of the finest natural deep-water harbours on the eastern seaboard of North America.
