The Public Works Department is responsible for maintenance of the Town's infrastructure system, including water and sewer mains, streets and sidewalks. A seven man division, under the direction of the Superintendent of Public Works, personnel employed in this Department represent the only unionized environment within the hierarchy of the Town's operations.

Street maintenance includes such items as the repair of potholes, the installation and/or replacement of stop signs, street signs and directional signs. In winter operations, this includes the salting of Town streets for the safe use of our motoring public.

Sidewalk maintenance involves the construction and repair of the Town's sidewalk system. Handicapped accessible ramps have been constructed at all of the Town's intersections, earning the Town the reputation of having one of the most barrier free infrastructure systems in Nova Scotia.

The maintenance of the Town's in-ground infrastructure system is the most important function that the Department performs. Water and sewer mains require regular repair; and, it seems that rupture of these lines often happens in the most inclement weather. Restoration of service to the user public is the credo that drives these men to endure often difficult and hazardous conditions.

The Department is well equipped to meet the demands of everyday activity and the dedication of its personnel is unquestioned. Principal equipment inventory includes a backhoe, a salt truck, a dump truck, two service vehicles and the Superintendents' vehicle.

Departmental personnel are on call 24/7, to respond to emergency demands that may range from sewer and water problems to a dislocated manhole cover. The after hours emergency number is the same as the weekday listing (902-625-1975).
